One of my favorite parts of visiting Boston was walking through the park that was the result of the “Big Dig” and putting their biggest highway underground. Same as when I lived in SF and enjoyed walking along the Embarcadero, which used to be an elevated highway. Good to see that Reconnect Austin is proposing something similar
Completely agree, and cities should do more of it. When I lived in SF, we were near Octavia St, which also used to be covered by an expressway until the Loma Prieta earthquake knocked it down, along with Embarcadero. The neighborhood that emerged around Octavia is one of the most vibrant and walkable in the city.
My plan to solve I-35 traffic is to put a 12 foot high bar across the highway in Round Rock and Buda. Construction can be completed next week and is expected to cost 0.01% of the cost of the expansion.
Trucks driving through can take 130 instead. Ok fine, give trucks a toll entrance at both places that allows them to deliver within Austin.
Close I-35
